Acupuncture

What is acupuncture, and how does it work?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing practice in which super-fine needles are inserted in precise locations on the body in order to help the body restore or maintain proper energy flow along pathways called meridians. According to Chinese Medicine, imbalances of our energy—called Qi—is the root of illness.

benefits

What we know from western medical research is that acupuncture increases blood flow in the body, reduces inflammation, and increases the production of helpful neurotransmitters and endorphins, our body's natural pain and stress relievers. Acupuncture is a beautiful way to restore balance to the body caused by internal and external stressors, and one of Dr. Katie’s favorite modalities to serve her patients.

Acupuncture has also been used to help reduce negative effects caused by:

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Neck and back pain, TMJ disorders

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis

  • Muscle spasms

  • Asthma, allergies and chronic congestion

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Menstruation or perimenopause

  • Nausea due to pregnancy, anesthesia or chemotherapy

While these are an example of conditions helped by acupuncture, there are many more reasons that patients choose this modality.

What to expect during your appointment

We recommend you arrive at your appointment with a little nourishment and hydration in your belly, and an empty bladder. These treatments often encourage your body’s “rest + digest” relaxation response which makes more urine, makes you hungry, or makes your body temperature decrease.

All acupuncture treatments are administered while you lie down in a comforting treatment room. Soft music, dim lighting, a heat lamp, and blankets can be requested to increase your comfort.

After treatment, we recommend you resume normal life carefully. You may feel a little tired, or a little more energized for the remainder of the day. We encourage you to choose mindful, gentle movement after sessions and not intense workouts.

Acupuncture treatments are recommended every week to two weeks for more substantial issues that you are trying to address, as there’s a benefit to consistent, regular treatments for the body. For more short-term symptoms, like an ankle sprain or muscle spasm, it may be helpful to visit more often for a shorter period of time.

Trigger Point Injections

What are trigger points, and how do injections work?

Trigger points are areas of muscle “knots” or spasms in the body that feel sensitive to the touch, often resulting after intense physical exercise, injuries, or chronic overuse. You know this feeling as the “hurts so good” (or just hurts!) when someone gives you a massage.

A trigger point in a muscle can cause strain within the muscle and in other related parts of the body through fascial connective tissue, leading to tightness and disruptions in our energy flow.

Dr. Katie uses technique similar to acupuncture to relieve these areas of muscle spasm with a needle technique called a trigger point injection (TrP). A small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, is injected into the sore muscle, allowing the muscle contraction to ease and the body’s natural healing to take over.

We recommend you arrive at your appointment with a little nourishment and hydration in your belly, and an empty bladder. These treatments often encourage your body’s “rest + digest” relaxation response which makes more urine, makes you hungry, or makes your body temperature decrease.

TrP treatments are typically administered while you either sit upright or lie down in a comfortable treatment room. Soft music can be requested to increase your comfort.

After treatment, we recommend you resume normal life carefully. You may feel a little tired, or a little more energized for the remainder of the day. We encourage you to choose mindful, gentle movement after sessions and not intense workouts. Generally, patients report feeling mild soreness from TrP treatment for about a day before the pain eases considerably.

Energy Healing

What is energy healing, and how does it work?

Similar to acupuncture, energy healing, also known as energy work, is a form of complementary medicine based on the belief that there’s a vital energy flowing through our bodies which can be influenced and supported.

The goal of energy healing is to help the body, mind, and spirit find balance, improve quality of life, support the immune system, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote general well-being.

Dr. Katie uses her own unique method for energy healing sessions that involve hands-on and hands-off modalities along with essential oils.

You can receive energy healing with or without concurrent acupuncture. Acupuncture allows for alignment of the body and even deeper relaxation during an energy healing session, but it’s not necessary to pair the two together. When receiving both services, acupuncture needles are placed, and energy healing can begin.

After treatment, we recommend you resume normal life carefully. You may feel a little tired, or a little more energized for the remainder of the day. We encourage you to choose mindful, gentle movement after sessions and not intense workouts.
