The Fire of Change

June 6, 2020

Hi friends,

I have spent the last 5 weeks doing yoga focused on the Ayurvedic Elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Ether (Space) with Mindy.

And right now, I'm feeling too much Air.

At times I'm anxious, overwhelmed. I'm not sleeping well. My brain is busy, with my energy spinning above my head. My Heart is literally all over the place.

At the same time, the seasonal energy of Summer is upon us. Daylight comes early and stays late. Sometimes it's almost hot outside, which feels agitating and uncomfortable.

Fire is here.

And what can happen when Fire and Air combine?

Combustion.

We see combustion everywhere we look. It's on the streets and the news and in our heated conversations with family, friends and coworkers.

But what happens when a gentle flame is given just the right amount of kindling and an airy breeze from beneath?

The flame grows.

And it glows.

And it creates the Fire of Change.

With the recent turn of events and even greater awareness of inequality in our experience as humans, many of us have turned inward and asked ourselves, "What can I do to change?"

When I feel out of balance with the state of the world, I think first about how I recenter myself.

How do I recenter myself?

I do a yoga practice that calms the Fire & Air, and focuses on Earth or Water. I steer clear of HIIT workouts. I eat nourishing foods that are warm, anchoring and not sugary. I give myself Space in the middle of the night when I'm awake to meditate and not be mad that I'm not sleeping. I take walks in Nature with friends who bring me joy. I linger in my nightly magnesium salt bath. I speak with even more tenderness than necessary because I want my words to be soothing.

Once I recenter myself, I think about my impact on the World. I have a unique opportunity as a physician to heal. Many people trust me with much more than their health. They trust me with their Spirits.

Know that I am here for you.

Know that I am with you.

Know that my heart is open. My Fire is glowing with a the groundedness of kindling from the Earth and the movement of a gentle breeze of Air. And I am here for you when you need me.

I'm committed to you as part of my Community. I'm committed to creating the change in ourselves that will serve the greater World.

If it speaks to you, join me for Meditation for the Greater Good on Thursday 6/11/20 at 7:30pm. We will raise money to benefit the amazing educational Detroit non-profit Focus: HOPE that I worked at during my Americorps internship in college.

Meditation to soothe the Souls of our Community that benefits an organization creating Change is what I can do right now. I am here for you.

Love,
Dr. Katie
